London Marathon ballot day! Why you should run for Team Vision…

The London Marathon is an event we eagerly await here at Vision Foundation. Last ballot day, we spoke to two Team Vision alumni who ran to save sight and change lives…

Leon first heard of us through a friend of his who has been supported by the Vision Foundation. That same friend chose to run for us so he could give something back, so as soon as there were available places, Leon keenly registered to secure his place. Leon said: “The support given throughout the build-up and on the day was great by the Vision Foundation team.”

Gregg heard of us from his partially sighted friend who had asked him to be his guide runner “He has often told me of the amazing work that you do as a charity and it was a cause incredibly close to him. To be asked to support him on the run was an honour so I jumped at the chance.”

The post-run pub gathering…

Leon and Gregg smiling arm in arm after the marathon. Both wearing Team Vision vests and their completion medals.

Along with cheering on the runners during the race, we organise a post-run gathering at a local pub. It’s mostly to say thank you and to raise a glass, but Leon said it helped his recovery! “It actually helped me recover faster after listening to all the other runners’ experiences.” Gregg agreed saying “… it was a great experience to hear how others found it and be bought pints by kind people!”

If you’re looking for a charity to run for, we’d love to welcome you to Team Vision. With a little advice from Gregg: “Try to take it one step at a time and embrace the aches!” And Leon “…to find a plan that works for you and follow it… On the day itself, stick to your pace, I got caught up in the atmosphere and went off too quick and made the last 5km horrible, but got through it.”

Whichever method you choose to train we’ll be with you every step of the way, from sign up to that victory drink in the pub!
