Finding treasure in our charity shops

For many blind and partially sighted people, shopping can be an arduous task. Shops may be difficult to navigate with narrow aisles, trip hazards and items not in their usual place. We’veVision Foundation Portobello Road charity shop front listened to our visually impaired shoppers and started adapting our seven fabulous stores to address these issues. Over the coming months our Retail Team will be refreshing our shops and will all receive guiding and assisted shopping training.

Being able to navigate the shop easily is a key feature, so our new-look West Norwood store now features high contrasting strips of colour to help navigate doorways and pathways as well as keeping those pathways clear. It also has a display where you can find out how your eyesight is affected by different conditions and we shall be rolling out these new features in all of our shops. Our price tags in our shops have been updated with a high contrast, large yellow circle on which prices are written in black ink.

Vision Foundation Director of Retail, Phil Beaven, hopes everyone will have a fantastic shopping experience:

“We want our blind and partially sighted customers to enjoy a safe shopping environment, with a great range of items to choose from and a team on hand to guide them in their purchases.”
